The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated around the globe every year on October 17. Since 2007, the day was officially recognized by the United Nations to honor the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. Nearly 1/2 of the world’s population, more than 3 billion people live on less than 2.5 dollars a day. More than 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty ie less than 1.25 dollar a day. According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. Poverty is the main cause of hunger in the world. This is true in rich and poor countries alike or whether people live in urban or rural areas. Its a fact that most people who are hungry are living in extreme poverty. The day is just a gentle reminder to the world about our brothers and sisters across the world, irrespective of  nationality, religion and  cast, struggling to find a meal .This is the day for us to declare to our society that that poverty is a violation of human rights and the need to come together to ensure that these rights are respected. It also remind us, as children, how lucky we are to receive all the fortunes of life. Is it possible to fight this menace? The only sustainable solution towards poverty is empowering the poorest of poor by education and work skills. It should be a collective effort by the governments and all global citizen.  It’s the responsibility of every one of us to fight against poverty and contribute in whatever way we can. As the leaders of tomorrow, we children ,can also play our roles. Let’s create an awareness about poverty in our schools and other groups. Let’s inform our friends not to waste food, when thousands of children’s die every day because of lack of food. Let’s cut down our extra luxuries and contribute the amount for the poor. Let’s behave responsibly and thank the almighty for our fortunes and more important let’s take a pledge that it’s our responsibility to support our society and will carry on this fight throughout our life.
