Have we ever thought, if we are paying a heavy prize for our luxuries and comforts? Do we hurt something in our quest for progress? Yes. Knowingly or unknowingly we are bleeding our mother Earth. Ever increasing and never ending human demands has put our mother Earth in imminent danger. Every day, two million tons of sewage, industrial and agricultural waste are discharged into the world’s water bodies. This is equivalent to the weight of the entire human population in this planet. In America, forty percent of the rivers and forty four percent of the lakes are polluted and are considered unhealthy for swimming, fishing or aquatic life.  Our planet is currently losing over fifteen billion trees each year, which is equivalent to  fifty six acres of forest every minute. About 3.3 million deaths are caused by outdoor air pollution. Many species are disappearing from our plant. This statistics is scary but sadly reflect the prize we are paying for our life.

The only way to stop this or reduce its impact is to raise the awareness among people across the world and create an army of global citizen who can fight this menace. We need to impart everyone with the vital knowledge to inspire people’s movements for environmental protection. In 1970, United Nations took this initiate and decided to celebrate April 22 as International Earth Day. Since then this event is celebrated across globe.  Today these efforts are coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network and is celebrated in more than 193 countries each year. Committed citizens across the world conduct demonstrations and carry out campaigns highlighting the importance of protecting our mother Earth. Today the world realize the importance of stopping deforestation, reducing carbon foot prints and protecting our fresh water bodies.

Living in this planet also means, leaving this place beautiful, clean and healthy for future generations as well. We, as students play a major role in this process. We are the leaders of tomorrow. Today, on International Earth Day, let’s educate among our self about the importance of Environment protection. Let’s take an effort to reduce the amount of wastage at our home. Let’s make sure electricity us utilized more responsibly in our school and home. Let’s try to use our Bicycles more than bikes.  Protecting Earth is not only the job of any government. If we want to make a change in this world, be that change ,get out of your homes and start working towards it.We should always remember that some one else is paying for all our comforts.
